Bilene Accommodation - also known as Praia do Bilene, is a town in southern Mozambique, lying 140 kilometers northeast of Maputo in the province of Gaza. It is known as a beach resort, lying on the Mozambique Channel. Noted for its calm and clear lagoon, the Uembje Lagoon, giving way to the pounding Indian Ocean beyond tall dunes.
The Gaza Province is dominated by strings of inland lakes and nowhere are they more beautiful than at Bilene. This peaceful town, known as San Martino in the days of Portuguese Mocambique, is situated on a hill overlooking the sprawling waters of the Uembje Lagoon which is a huge stretch of water, about 8km wide and 27km long and reaching depths of 50 meters. The shores are shallow and are ringed by beautiful white sandy beaches with rolling sand dunes and tropical lush vegetation.

The

town of Bilene

has a small but colourful local market. Fresh produce and a variety of foodstuffs can be purchased from the locals. Brightly coloured capalanas (sarongs) and locally made clothes swing from the stores. The curio sellers hawk their wooden wares and the ever present cashew nut sellers are in abundance. At the back of the market, you can find the locally caught fish from the lagoon – normally small garoupa, as well as crabs and prawns.

This area has some of the finest diving spots with fascinating vibrant corals and other marine life, and leatherback turtles are often seen in waters close to the lodge. You can occasionally spot a dugong. The humpback whales visit from June-November – and are seen regularly about 200 m from the shore line. Mocambique generally enjoys year round warm, sunny weather. The hottest time of the year is November – March and this tends to bring rain. It can also be humid and temperatures are around 30 degrees and upwards. The winter months (May-July) are still warm during the day but generally cooler in the evenings. Winter is very pleasant and a light tracksuit top may be required in the evenings. Sea temperatures vary between 22 degrees C in winter to 29 in summer.

is best accessed through the Kosi Bay border post in KwaZulu Natal. The border is approximately six hundred and thirty kilometers from Johannesburg and four hundred and sixty kilometers from Durban. It is open 7 days a week (08h00 to 17h00). Between the border and the

Scuba diving enthusiast can make their way to any of the many magnificent and world renowned reefs in the area. Various vibrantly coloured species of coral, and large marine animals which include the likes of Whale Sharks, Manta Rays and Humpback Whales are regularly sighted in the area.
Bread Loaf is the easiest of the sites to dive, and is recommended for new comers to the diving scene, offering chances of spotting reef sharks, Red Fang Triggers, Angel Fish, Chocolate Dips, Hermit Crabs, Snappers and Moray Eels.
Aquarium which is situated at Ponta Malongane Bay, a short distance from Ponto do Ouro, has often been described as an underwater fish tank boasting a wide variety of tropical species.
Surf fishing for barracuda, king fish and bream proves to be a profitable experience, deep sea anglers can enjoy the likely chances of pulling out marlin, sailfish, king mackerel (cuta), queen mackerel (natal snoek), dorado, wahoo, green job fish (kaakap), and various species of tuna.

For those wanting a more relaxed experience, the area is well known for its whale watching, and dolphins which allow visitors to swim with them in the shallow waters. Other natural attractions to be found along the coastline include the Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles which can be often seen laying their eggs in the sand during the summer months.

PONTA DO OURO - Maputo Province, southern Mozambique Ponto do Ouro or "Point of Gold" gets its name from the fact that early Portuguese explorers were misled by unreliable maps, thinking that gold might be found there. Upon arrival they found that the dunes were rich in black titanium, and the only gold in the area was the colour of the setting sun shining over the long white beaches. Essentially this area is an extension of South Africa's Maputaland, but far more pristine.

Tofo is a coastal town in southeastern Mozambique

. It's known for the curved Tofo Beach and nearby coral reefs. Huge manta rays circle at Manta Reef, a well-known “cleaning station,” attracting small fish that feed off the rays’ parasites and other debris. Dolphins, whale sharks and migratory humpback whales also swim off the coast, in the waters of the Indian Ocean. To the north are the resorts of Barra Beach.

Tofino, less than a kilometre south, is situated on a more exposed and rocky headland and the waves at

Tofino are known for very good surfing

. The headland is also a favourite spot for fishermen when a high tide covers the shelf, allowing casting for the plentiful kingfish into the deep waters beyond.

Tofino is also the site of the Frelimo Monument to Fallen Heroes, near to where unfortunate victims of the colonial period were thrown into a sea cave, to be drowned by the rising tide. A spectacular blow hole near the tip of the point can give a raw display of power, when there is a large swell running.

BEACHES - The shores of Inhambane are blessed with numerous world-class beaches. Many are palm-fringed, with wide expanses of powdery, white sand, washed by the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Featuring broad bays, sheltered lagoons, rocky headlands and wide deserted expanses, they are a sunbathers’ dream, created for relaxation. Some of the best-known are in close proximity to the city of Inhambane.

There is a bus service regularly from Tofo to Inhambane. There are banks in the city centre, with BIM having a cash machine for Visa cards and BCI a Bureau de Change. The Post Office is at the end of Avenida de lndependência, the street that starts at the jetty.
